Not a dazzling sequel to the masterly first part... A third part would be even more superfluous.

The story seems loose and incoherent... and especially after I saw The Awakening a few weeks ago, this was again one of the many horror films with a deja vu content. We are familiar with the list: orphans + country house + I see I see what you don't see-things + old curse and so you know how the last shot of the film will go. And indeed.

To make it more interesting, we put a WWII theme on top of it... In which you can see that it is a superfluous theme in the film. I found the acting of the female lead actress, that pilot and that boy a few plus points. That birth flashback was also strong.

The dark atmosphere doesn't really work either... and the elements that made you shudder in part 1 end up on your plate rather chewed up.

No... Could have been better. And some sequels could have proved that.

2.5*

Redundant.

It's always a bit risky when directors embark on a sequel to a movie that isn't really fit for a sequel. Because the first part already made the film end, they decided to work from the other side. By that I mean that this sequel is really just a prequel.

At the time, the first film managed to score with the setting and a tension that was fairly built up thanks to the ghostly atmosphere. They don't seem to have understood that with this prequel. Despite the fact that there is enough grimness throughout the film, it only takes a long time before the film really jumps to the first scenes that can capture the attention of the viewer.

Once that happens, the viewer is treated with some nice images. It should also be clear that some money has been saved for this film. Multiple images that surpass the cheap horror level with ease. The unfortunate thing is that these images only really catch on towards the final. Everything before that is rather boring gibberish between extremely uninteresting characters.

In terms of horror, one moment that really stood out in terms of setup. That was about the only scary moment that can be seen in the film. Not that these films have always aimed at the scare moments, but if the tension under the skin can never really wriggle free, the fun pretty much stops. It's a shame so much money was spent on the film.
