The film describes a few months in the life of a budding writer. During those few months he has a romance with a married French woman. It is an intense and passionate love that perhaps only occurs once in a person's life.

A film also about an affair that takes place in complete freedom, but must comply with strict time frames and strict rules. The free French morality contained in regulations.

The film contains many long takes in which the strict lines and design are particularly striking. Right angles and straight lines. The main characters move in tightly set frames. This striking staging by the camera emphasises the limited freedom that the main characters enjoy within the liaison.

The long takes look well taken care of by the way. A pleasure for the eyes.

The rest of the film work is according to the romantic book. Lots of sightseeing in New York and scenes where happiness and love unmistakably radiate.

There is little depth in the narrative. Nor is there much depth in the characters. There are good, sharp dialogues with intelligent humour. The dialogues are fun to follow, especially in the first half of the film. In a witty way, stimulating and tentatively spicy. However, once the first layer of introduction has been peeled off, the wit disappears from the conversation and the content becomes more romantic in nature. Less fun to follow, because less spice and more obligatory sugar work.

The film that remains after the turnaround is therefore no more than a nice romantic film. Not special, but just nice. The lack of depth in the characters is also quite noticeable from that moment on. The empathy with the characters is difficult.

Nevertheless, great acting. The supporting roles of Close and Langella are fantastic.

Unfortunately, the film fails to really strike a chord. Perhaps because the romance is too reminiscent of an unrealistic boy's fantasy: a somewhat blunt twenty-something starts talking to a 33-year-old French woman when she is smoking outside during her lunch break. The spark apparently ignites with that first awkward moment and an affair is born. What exactly she sees in him remains a mystery throughout the film; he comes across as green and boring and, moreover, she is way out of his league.

The film seems to want to allude to a cultural difference in relationships; in America it is not done to have an extramarital affair, in France a marriage is much more open. A bit too simplistic in my opinion, but okay.

The film doesn't really go any further than that. The fact that the main character is a novice writer is hardly touched upon in the film. We don't see him write a single letter and we see nothing of his potential talent. His personality is also difficult to place; is he insecure and a struggling writer or does he really know what he's doing? On the one hand he can come across as sympathetic, on the other hand he can also come across as stiff and boring.

Beautifully shot images of New York by the way, but that's the only thing that could charm me a little. Besides, other films have done that more often and better.

Good film about a young man who meets a nice woman, who unfortunately turns out to be married. A film about an unusual extramarital relationship with good dialogues about love and cultural differences. A somewhat original romcom where the course is not so easy to predict. Easily 3.5 stars, also because of the fine cast including the beautiful Bérénice Marlohe.
