Perhaps one of the most important books of the 20th century.

And completely wrongly forgotten too much. In any case, for us Dutch people it is still somewhat to be condoned in the distance that this piece of history has faded into the background, I just hope that things are a little better for Great Britain with the awareness of the rather recent history. Which immediately makes this *the* movie of the year as far as I'm concerned - and not only because of the remembrance of a very good and very important book by an interesting writer, but of course also because of the brilliantly good way in which it is presented.

Alicia Vikander may have an easy part in that. But on the other hand, a more British role is hardly conceivable - apart from the name for a while - and that a Swedish one is asked for it is something very special, but she lives up to it in every way, there can be no doubt to be over. The natural development of the plot might help a little, but still - it mainly helps to substantiate the strength of Brittain's character, and Vikander does that seriously well - in all depth and breadth absolutely Brittain and her emotions. With all the talent out there in the UK it's quite a compliment to Vikander - but rightly so, as she puts it.

Besides the beautiful game, that is mainly the merit of this film - to once again bring the work of Vera Brittain to the attention. About a hundred years ago, but not really outdated either. And yes, there may be better films about the first world war, but I'm not sure if there are more gripping ones out there.

Beautiful British film about friendship, love, sacrifice, the horror of war.
The first half hour is a bit sluggish, but in the meantime it sketches the neat existence of the Brittain family and their circle of friends, which will later come into sharp contrast with the following : a gripping war event in which irreparable wounds are inflicted but other tendencies also emerge , such as men and especially women who are willing to voluntarily take part in the war. In the end, the defense of the revenge and retaliation attitude is put forward.
With this "Testament of Youth", James Kent has put down a moving film that can certainly be recommended.

Beautiful drama with an excellent balance between suffering, love and friendship. The story has a strong careful construction in which beautiful images alternate perfectly with the horror of the war. You don't get to see much of the war itself, but the suffering and consequences are clearly brought to the fore. Alicia Vikander plays her part amazingly. 7.5/10
