After his wife's fatal car accident, lawyer Elliot Anderson (Kevin Costner) is widowed. Since his daughter died in childbirth, Elliot has taken on the upbringing of his half-blood granddaughter. As he works through his grief, his world is turned upside down when Rowena (Octavia Spencer), the child's African-American grandmother, demands that Eloise be taken into the care of her father Reggie. Reggie is a drug addict who blames Elliot for the death of his own daughter. However, Elliot will do everything in his power to maintain custody of his grandchild.

A nice snack, not particularly in the genre of 'custody cases' but it is certainly watchable. It lacks credibility, that white grandpa and black grandma don't get along is not really convincing, the reconciliation is also very easy, and predictable because you soon notice that the two need each other , the whole movie seems like those two get along well, their "bad relationship" lacks conviction. The ease with which grandpa writes a check for $ 25,000 for his drug-addicted son-in-law is also not convincing, as is how easily the son-in-law keeps changing attitudes. These plot holes are compensated with excellent acting and nice acting and chemistry between grandpa, grandma and child (but too much chemistry if they have to represent two quarreling people). 3*

Unbalanced drama about Eloise [Jillian Estell] whose mother died giving birth and whose father has been out of the picture for years due to drug addiction. When her grandmother Carol [Jennifer Ehle] dies in an accident, grandfather Elliott [Kevin Costner], a top lawyer with a drinking problem, tries to take over the parenting task as best he can. But then Eloise's other grandmother Rowena [Octavia Spencer] comes on the scene. She fears that Elliott will not be able to take good care of her granddaughter and decides to claim parenthood. Together with her son and lawyer Jeremiah [Anthony Mackie], she decides to play two trump cards: the rights of Eloise's biological father [André Holland] and the racism card.
The tendentious title suggests that Binder has something relevant to say here about the role of skin color in the US custody battle, but the theme of racism is handled in a rather tasteless way in this poorly written family drama about a girl who is way too wise for her age. Costner and Spencer's star power and talent keep things afloat, but Paula Newsome steals the show as the bold judge.

The movie Black or White is a jewel. The story about the custody battle for the girl Eloise is very layered in a subtle way. The confluence of various circumstances in the story also makes this film complicated, but the simplicity of the depth is superbly translated by the cast. The actors and actresses simplify the emotionally complicated scenes by playing the acting small, as it were, but the small game is played with great conviction. I think the dialogues of the film are of an exceptionally high level, because it is not easy to capture racial issues in a scene. The dialogues in the scenes make sense, show contradictions, are raw for the trained ear and at the same time are full of love for the child. It was eye-watering how seasoned cracks like Octavia Spencer, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Costner managed to take the story to the next level with their formidable playing, allowing the depth of simplicity in this film to float upwards.
