The Friends of Eddie Coyle plot

"It’s a grubby, violent, dangerous world. But it’s the only world they know. And they’re the only friends Eddie has."

Eddie 'Fingers' Coyle (Robert Mitchum) never got very far in the underworld for all his great ambitions. And when a prison sentence hangs over him, he begins to pass information on to the police, in the hope of escaping his sentence. In vain, however, and a buddy also pranks him, which really lands him in trouble. When the police manage to catch a couple of bank robbers, to whom Eddie supplied the weapons, the mafia also opens the hunt for him.

Raw, unpolished crime film from the years when ice hockey players played without helmets. Real men, and that happens here with a cast that still shows a dose of bravado in dialogue, but otherwise operates in a businesslike, cool mode in accordance with the scenario. That authentic, gray ambiance is further reinforced by the lynchpin of the whole.

Mitchum is excellent as an insignificant criminal of age with his own problems while he tries to keep his head above water between the various interests that serve his environment. Call it a character driven film in which Yates keeps it modest and with relatively little action or violence comes across very effectively and powerfully. Eddie 'Fingers' Coyle is a monument.

Excellent film about a criminal who tries to avoid his punishment by passing on information to the police. A crime film with a nice 70s look where the characters are credible. The excellent location work and the fact that the film has little embellishment (also almost no music), increase the realism.

Nice raw crime film from the 70s. Not raw because of gross violence or anything like that; there is not much spectacular in the film. But what a sober representation of the criminal environment. No good guys and no bad guys: it is difficult to sympathize with any character. The term "friends" is meant ironically here because Eddie Coyle does not have one. You only see people who are involved in dirty business. A snitch who wants to avoid prison at all costs, an arms dealer, a gang of bank robbers, a bartender who is also a hitman for the mafia, a manipulative agent.... Great ending too. This is a film for those who have a big heart for the gritty 70s, but do not expect action and violence.
