Nice.

Although it does fall within expectations. Lupin is big, especially in Japan, so despite Kitamura being the director it all remains a bit tame. Still a bit slicker and more action-packed than I expected, but the freaky Kitamura stays in the stable in this film.

Another problem is that Kitamura is not at his best as the budget increases. Here too he has some problems to properly portray the action, simply because he often wants too much. The action scenes do not always flow well, which is a pity for a film like Lupin.

Small warning further: this film is normally in a mix of languages. There is also a Japanese dub but that quickly becomes annoying when clearly no Japanese is spoken. Also enough nationalities in this film, so just watch the original dub.

Otherwise quite nice, with a good Oguri. Kuroki, Tamayama and Ayano also assert themselves, while Asano takes on a nice light role. It is all nicely exaggerated and although I have not seen that much Lupin it is all quite recognizable. The small car, the tie, the crazy and light action scenes. Kitamura sometimes makes it perhaps a bit too modern, but it did not bother me in any case.

Smooth entertainment. It is certainly not great, the action does not come out well enough for that, but otherwise a nice (but substantial) snack.

3.5*

Director Ryûhei Kitamura announced this film as a "grand project" and to a certain extent Rupan Sansei is. I did not know the source material yet, but it is apparently very popular in Japan and this whole thing forms a kind of origin story there. With Kitamura's dynamic direction, this should also lead to good entertainment, but for him the approach here is relatively tame. The camera work is fortunately old-fashioned energetic and the colorful design of the world that is created here is nice, but the characters on the other hand do not get off the ground at all. Needlessly childishly designed and above all uninterestingly developed, which means that the running time of 133 minutes relatively quickly becomes boring. Fortunately, a few action-packed scenes in between provide some life in the brewery and Kitamura clearly seems to enjoy this project, but it will not get higher than a narrow pass for me.
