Grease plot

"Grease is the word."

Australian Sandy is spending her vacation in America. There she falls in love with Danny. But all good things come to an end, and so does the holidays. When her parents decide to stay in America after all, Sandy accidentally ends up at the high school that Danny also attends. When she finds out, her happiness is short-lived, because Danny from vacation turns out to be a tough hunk at school who belongs to the T-Birds. And that is why he has a certain image to uphold. Sandy tries to befriend the most popular girls in the school, the Pink Ladies. But because of her frumpy appearance, she remains a loner. A change is needed.

Went to Grease in Breda tonight!

wow! It's great to see this movie back in theaters.

Saw my father in the Roxy in Bergen op Zoom forty years ago. It's actually unbelievable that we children of about ten years old were also completely captivated by the Grease/Travolta craze, which reigned for about a year at the time. At the time we thought that was quite normal, but now I think: weren't we much too young for this film?

In any case: a very nice reunion and how good they are: John and Olivia! A fantastic film duo and how quickly their star was also extinguished. Travolta finally made a comeback in the 90s.

Of course I had watched the film a number of times on TV/DVD in recent years, but now on a large screen and with very good sound it makes a world of difference. Wonderful feel good movie and great songs that are still very well known.

It was a beautiful experience!

Still has always been a favorite of mine and I am raising my vote from four to five stars!

Grease works a bit like religion for me: if you get it introduced at a young age, the chance that it sticks is considerably greater. Because Jesus, how much joy can a man take. Yet I still succumb to the intrusive cheerfulness and slick charisma of this romantic high-school musical with screwball elements. It will be, next to a select group of childhood favorites, the film I have seen the most ever.

From Valli's opening tune (with wacky animation) to the silly moment Danny and Sandy car taking off waving goodbye to their friends, and all the giggling innocence and wannabe bravado in between; I can talk and sing it all seamlessly. The film is never exciting, rarely really funny and musically as cheesy as can be, but the unpretentious conviction with which the girl-most-boy story is served is hardly to be blamed. Yes, that it all tastes very sweet and rosy, that there is absolutely no sharp edge to the whole film - or, if you're a real sourpuss: that the anti-feminist morality nowadays is of course no longer acceptable -, but it therefore does not have the intention of being even somewhat sharp. And I learned (you could say: fortunately) at a young age to embrace that uber-polished and carefree form of entertainment for what it is.

Other downsides are the scenes that do the long playing time a bit injustice, such as the song sung by Rizzo or the slower songs by Danny and Sandy. Enjoy the joie-de-vivre of the whole, no matter how much the dip in love is necessary for the story. I always revived when Danny stumbles on the track, Sandy comes to his aid in shock ("Danny!"), and they laugh at that jock together. I was happy again. Because that's what this film is supposed to do. As unabashedly as possible. 3*

1978 I was 12 years old at the beginning of my puberty. Yes everyone went to Grease then. Very popular at the time. And almost every song was number 1 on the charts. Then came the more serious Dirty Dancing and the teenage movie Porky's Spicy Amusement Park. All a bit intertwined. Of course also in

Grease with the car race that resembles Ben Hur.

Grease has been nicely patched up to 4k. A step forward but not earth-shattering. Saw some softer moments and not everything was razor sharp. The music without Dolby Atmos is also a shame. Still a great movie from the late 70's.

Movie 4.5
