Not as bad as I remembered from when my local movie house put on a proper Roger Corman cycle. In any case, what this film has as advantages are an old but still dignified (and still uniquely phrasing) Boris Karloff, a young Jack Nicholson, a quite attractive Sandra Knight, the overwhelming music that is both quantitatively and dramatically sounds almost like a dream apparition, and a nice atmosphere that (as several users here already point out) is helped by the vague and dark Extreme DVD, but that might have come into its own even better on a good transfer (like apparently the case on the HD Cinema Classics Blu-ray). So it's nice to like it more now than before, but that doesn't immediately make it a good film. Jack Nicholson: "That movie is immortal. There's no question about it. I was absurd. [...] It was the only completely scripted movie in the history of Hollywood in which there is actually no story." (Though, again, opinions are divided on how much script there really was—apparently only Karloff had some dialogue when Corman started shooting—but hey, the gist of Nicholson's comment is clear.)

Either I have a really bad print, however original film ( Extreme ), but the film just looks 20 years older than it is. Boring affair, the only bright spots are the mysterious settings such as the misty cliffs on the sea and the castle. The story does not really captivate and the well-known actors cannot lift it any higher. The twist at the end is nice, but too little for a pass. 4/10

Purchased years ago in the expectation that names like Nicholson and Karloff were a certain guarantee for a classic unknown to me. But nothing turned out to be less true when I saw the comments and grade averages and the appetite to start this was taken away from me. For years the film was in the closet and yesterday I finally tried it under the guise of; then we're off again.

And well, it doesn't even start that bad with the intro, the old man wandering through the catacombs, and the cartoon / animation that follows as the title role. The beginning certainly has a certain style and atmosphere, but that is unfortunately quickly destroyed with Nicholson's character wandering on the beach, something that can be described as a muddled and uninteresting phase. And actually that extends over the entire film, Andre who is after Ilse in that sense, something that is completely unclear to me and turns out to be just as uninteresting.

The rousing and old-fashioned exciting soundtrack can be called quite nice, the arrival at the castle, location, decor, settings and atmosphere can be called okay again, yet in the end far too little is done with it and the film drags from but 80 minutes laboriously towards its end and apotheosis which also looks equally ridiculous with the struggle between Ilse and the Baron. It even seems that at one point Ilse is laughing just like it's a joke.

No, this should be clear, quickly extend an end and continue with the next, because this was not much.
