And another step back from the level of Fun and Fancy Free.

The first three short films are very good. After that, the quality drops significantly, and eventually becomes quite tedious. Consequently, the later stories, the animation combined with the music and songs, left me feeling very little. It is primarily the first three short films that reach a high standard. In Once Upon a Time, Mary Blair's beautiful style can be admired. She would later gain more fame, particularly for her work on Alice in Wonderland. Bumble Boogie is delightfully experimental and the animation is very pleasant to watch. Johnny Appleseed is also a very enjoyable short film.

Still in a financially difficult situation, Disney has still not fully managed to return to its pre-war form. In terms of animation, there is much beauty to be seen here. However, less-than-good animation has also made it into the film. The quality is very inconsistent, with the lower standard prevailing.

This inconsistent compilation of short Disney cartoons can be considered Fantasia with pop music. The animation is very polished, with a good balance between functional and artistic work. The best sequences are a boogie version of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee," "Little Toot," excellently sung by The Andrews Sisters, and the meditative, visually impressive "The Tree," based on a poem by Joyce Kilmer. The sentimental story by pioneer Johnny Appleseed is the least interesting, and the colorful samba sequence with Donald Duck and Joe Carioca suffers from the mediocre music.

Now that I recently got Disney+, I was planning to finally catch up on all the Disney classics I hadn't seen yet. And as Melody Time proves, that is by no means always fun. Melody Time is an anthology of a handful of standalone short films that, individually, fail to truly convince. Or fail completely, in some cases. The animation is sometimes quite nice, but none of the shorts offers anything enjoyable in terms of story, and often it is all rather of a corny, saccharine variety. The music is also prominent, and that didn't really convince me either. I'm not really looking forward to the few other Disneys in this genre; I guess I'll just have to grit my teeth and bear with it.
