James Stewart plays Robert Leaf, a poet whose literature lessons increasingly seem to be giving way to scientific subjects such as mathematics. Together with his wife [Glynis Johns], he also tries to educate his children with art, but shortly after it becomes painfully clear that their 8-year-old son Rasmus [Bill Mumy] has no musical explanation whatsoever, his teacher discovers that what his great talent is... mathematics! Robert is of course not happy about this, until it turns out that he can use (or is it abuse?) the talent to save his faculty financially. Moreover, there is a glimmer of hope when it turns out that Rasmus likes to write... letters to Brigitte Bardot! Stewart and Johns give a masterclass in comedic acting in this entertaining, but somewhat forcedly silly comedy. Mumy holds up well, but the film is stolen by the inimitable John Williams as Robert's colleague Peregrine John, who also appears to have a special talent himself. Light-hearted nonsense, pleasant viewing.

Dear Brigitte is the fifth comedy that James Stewart and director Henry Koster made together. Nice (family) films with innocent, unpretentious humor. A bit corny sometimes, but quite fun. It is also nice that Brigitte Bardot has a small supporting role in Dear Brigitte and plays herself. The actress did not want to come to Hollywood to film there, so the entire film crew had to travel to Paris to shoot a scene of a few minutes.

James Stewart plays an absent-minded literature professor who is also a poet. He is averse to courses in which exact sciences are practiced and gives his children an upbringing in which the humanities play an important role. The shock is great when his son turns out to be a mathematical genius. From this fact emerges a film full of crazy and funny events.

It doesn't amount to much at all. The film offers innocent and friendly entertainment. Definitely not a highlight in Stewart's film career. Oh well, I had fun with this corny humorous vehicle. I was also curious about Bardot's appearance. However, Bardot's performance doesn't amount to much. The scene in which she appears is not particularly funny or lively. Just a routine number, it seems.

Bardot did not want her name included in the credits or used for promotional purposes. That is why the title of the film, which was originally going to be "Erasmus With Freckles", was changed to Dear Brigitte. The film still had a reference to the French star. I could not find out the reason why Bardot did not want to be associated with the film by name, but did want to participate.
