A loving and tender portrait of director Demy through the eyes of his wife Varda, both as a person and as an artist.

Jacquot de Nantes is no ordinary Demy biopic. The film primarily follows Demy as a boy and adolescent, and his desire to become a puppeteer/set builder/film director. Memories of and events from his childhood (including World War II) also play a key role in Jacques Demy's films. The film is frequently interwoven with Demy's oeuvre, where the same scene/memory reappears, often with astonishing results.

But it doesn't stop there...

Varda also portrays Demy as an old man on film, using extreme close-ups and even a gentle hand from Varda on his shoulder. Knowing that Demy died almost immediately after filming adds a touch of verve to this ode to a maverick director.

Impressive, although I'm one of the few, as it turns out once again...

Very enjoyable this film that pays tribute to filmmaker Jacques Demy.

Agnès Varda created a very special structure, interspersed with short fragments of films in which Demy had a foot.

A beautiful, atmospheric depiction of the war years and the years that followed. Numerous nostalgic French chansons brighten the scene, and what is most evident, and certainly intended, is the young Jacques Demy's intense passion for cinema, consistently and aptly portrayed by three young actors.
