Portugal 1936. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, a group of Portuguese students wants to wage war against the advancing fascism in Spain and in their own country, where Salazar holds sway. They devise a plan to transport a number of Spanish resistance fighters from Portugal to Spain by boat, a perilous undertaking involving many risks. However, one of the students is more preoccupied with winning the heart of the sister of one of the conspirators than with the fight against fascism.

It sounds a bit complicated, and it is. Luís Filipe Rocha has taken Jorge de Sena's novel as the starting point for his film, and that is interesting, because there aren't that many films about the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, and certainly not from the perspective of the 'neighbors' on the Iberian Peninsula. Already in the first scene, we see two Spanish refugees being taken from a boarding house by Salazar's secret police, which proves that the fascist regime in Portugal was working closely with Franco right from the start to overthrow Spain's legitimately elected government.

However, this film relies less on the story and more on the atmosphere: car rides along dark roads, secret meetings in parks at night, conspirators deeply divided over the objective of the operation, the role of the Communist Party, and the fear of the fleeing Spaniards about what awaits them. And then there are the romantic entanglements of Jorge and the beautiful Mercedes (Ruth Gabriel), who regularly share a bed. It is all a bit much. But the cinematography is beautiful, and so is the soundtrack. You are truly transported back in time, to the Portugal of the 1930s, and that is the film's main strength.
