Safari plot

The African continent is famous for its many exotic animals that have always captivated people all over the world, such as elephants, zebras, wildebeest and many other species. Quite a few people have therefore traveled to Africa on safari to observe the animals in the wild. But for some of them this is not enough. They want to kill the animals and take them home as souvenirs. For his documentary 'Safari', director Ulrich Seidl accompanies German and Austrian hunters/tourists on their journey and discusses their motivation and attitude towards their hobby.

Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl portrays wealthy German and Austrian hunting tourists in Africa in the documentary "Safari". Without judgement, he follows several wealthy hunting tourists, who are looking for trophies or just want to enjoy the thrill of killing a wild animal.

The smug pleasure hunters openly tell what the cruel hobby does to them "Killing? I don't call it that, that sounds like butting. I call it finishing". The controversial Ulrich Seidl, known for remarkable films such as "Import/Export (2007)" and "Im Keller (2014)", has always been interested in the depths of human action.

His documentary about the wealthy (who pay large sums of money to be allowed to shoot endangered animals) hunting tourists (Eva and her husband, their 20-year-old son and daughter and an older couple) in "Safari", is not recommended for the real animal and nature lover. After each fatal shot, the hunters congratulate each other with the hunting salute and take a picture in front of the downed animal. Then their guides drag the animal away. In a room behind the lodge, local African workers peel the valuable skin from the animal while they slip in the blood.

Don´t shoot the pianist, so Seidl can't be blamed much, but what a disgusting mess was portrayed here. In a way I also regret having to witness this. You know it's happening, whether you're watching or not.

Little sense of guilt among these hunters, how could it be otherwise. Shooting animals for fun. Every animal is valuable, but with a giraffe it is still a bit of a snail. A low point in the documentary.

Many also felt like they were still in the colonial era. That older couple in particular, certainly about the way they spoke about Africans, so condescending and paternalistic.

Let us indeed hope that they will one day serve as a meal for hyenas or lions. Then they will be good for something. No words for it.
