Much better.

The first part is quite disastrous. A film that was apparently only made for some extra money. With a sequel that has the same director and actors, expectations were not high at all.

And yet it was 100% not too bad. Budget for this one seemed noticeably higher to me and although the film is still quite far removed from the original Ringu films, that works to its advantage here. Much more graphic, the less is more approach is completely gone, but without the excess of lame 3D shots and with the extra budget it produces some cool scenes.

The girl is doing very well, which immediately brings some extra tension. The film is still a bit fluffy for a horror, but that is apparently part of the Ringu series. A bit too far-fetched and explanatory, so the tension disappears somewhat towards the end, but otherwise a pleasant sequel.

I have no idea if this will go any further, but the open ending certainly leaves plenty of room. One more step in this direction and Hanabusa may have a small masterpiece on his hands. Although that still requires some effort.

3.0*

Director Tsutomu Hanabusa exchanges the horror for a big punch of sentiment. Of course there are rare moments of horror in between, but the finale goes in a rather dramatic direction that I can't quite follow. Fortunately, the computer effects look less wooden and the acting of the young Kokoro Hirasawa is particularly convincing, but all that weak, substantive nonsense really tests your patience. The characters always have to solve some uninteresting mystery and that is always revealed in the same bare and dry way. The finale takes quite a turn, so the highlights can be found earlier in the middle section. Sadako's menacing charisma is now hard to find and contemporary directors only seem to use the character to provide a starting point for their tired drama. In any case, it won't be my thing.
