Marina plot

"Immigrant who wants a better life."

Italy 1948. Ten-year-old Rocco grows up in a beautiful but poor mountain village in Calabria, until one day his father decides to look for a better future for his family. He leaves for Belgium, to earn money in the coal mines, and then return to his native country. But soon he has his family come over and so young Rocco becomes a migrant overnight. The gray mining area in Limburg, the icy winters, the racism and the foreign language and culture are a damper on the joie de vivre of the little boy. Rocco wants to be like the other children and become someone and mean something in life.

A touching story indeed, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Plot is rather bland and perfunctory, last act even misses the mark. Technically clunky too, budget constraints are pretty obvious and the ending sequence is laughably cheap. Furthermore, a fine Italian cast, father and mother do a lot better than Simoni.

2.5*

What a very beautiful biopic. I had seen a part of it before and now that it was on TV I started from scratch. Yes, this is a very good film, a film that manages to convey that Italian atmosphere and then strikes a moving chord. The music is also very nice and Matteo Simoni brings the songs of Rocco quite well.

Luigi Lo Cascio is of course no stranger to those who have seen La Meglio Gioventu. Although I think this is a stronger role. Magnificent how defeated he looks after his accident in the mine. Within 6 months they would lose their home. Everything was for nothing, all his life he worked for nothing. I really felt sorry for the poor man. There are no words to properly describe the feelings of that scene. What Rocco does next at the end can of course be regarded as bland, but who cares. I found it believable and sincere. After all these years his father is finally proud of him. Please more of this, what a pearl.

Fine film by baron Stijn Coninx about the life of Rocco Granata, an Italian migrant youth whose father tried to earn the salt on the chips in the Limburg coal mines. Rocco, on the other hand, doesn't feel like wasting his health and seeks a way out through music, much to his father's chagrin.

Matteo Simoni does an excellent job as the young Rocco Granata and the Italian atmosphere with Vespas and the like is nicely displayed along with the prevailing rivalry with the Flemish. It's nice to hear so much Italian in the film, which improves the credibility. Life in the mines and the diligent work that was done also makes a person think that we have it better/easier today. There was a great sense of togetherness underground. Above ground it was more of an "us" versus "them" atmosphere. Nice to see the real Rocco Granata show up in the film. The film contains some excellent scenes such as the accident in the mine.

As far as I'm concerned, the film is a nice tribute to the real Rocco. And Marina remains a catchy song all in all. No idea how many Marina's were born at the time and later because of this song, but I don't want to feed them all. Beautiful!
