1942. Srulik, an eight-year-old Jewish boy, is able to flee the Warsaw ghetto. He tries to survive, initially all alone in the woods, and then on a Polish farm as a Christian orphan named Jurek. However, during his trials, his Jewish identity is in danger of being lost.

Srulik is eight years old when the German war machine tightens its grip on the Warsaw ghetto in 1942. His father knows that staying there will mean death for every Jew and therefore tries to get his son out of the Ghetto.
In the end, Srulik comes out of the camp and first tries to survive alone in the forests.
He soon finds out that trying to survive alone in the woods, that as an inexperienced boy from the city, he will not survive. That is why he joins a group of young people who, like him, have escaped the ghetto and learns to survive outside society in a city or village.
He also quickly comes to the conclusion that surviving without income and shelter / safety in the forest will not work and comes into contact with farmers and country people where he can earn a living. Unfortunately he has to let go of his own identity because as a Jew he is always hunted.
I was almost moved to tears on more than one occasion and to say the acting is fantastic is an understatement. This is not a war film as such, but is based on one true personal history away from the battlefield and the terrible things a war brings.
The language of instruction is Polish and German with good subtitles and we rate the film with an 8!

Good movie. Some memorable scenes. Lots of focus on survival. Never seen with a child, only by itself. It is harrowing how Jews were treated during the war. Not over-dramatized like the typical American work. Delivered very realistically and carrying a film at such a young age is not easy, but he does it superbly.

with all its hardships, surviving escape attempts etc etc.
well filmed, good performances.
Germans who also speak German, film-technically it all makes sense.
