Kat Connors is 17 when her mother Eve - a beautiful, enigmatic but tormented woman - disappears just as Kat is discovering her own sexuality. White Bird in a Blizzard
A bit of a dreamy and muddled film. In the case of White Bird in a Blizzard, that is both a strong and a weak point. The film has a pleasant pace and actually ripples along quietly. The missing mother of Kat Connor (Good girl turns bad Shailene Woodley) plays a major role in the background, but actually it's more about Kat and how she deals with it. It's strange to see Woodley swearing and going naked and I can't say it's natural for her. Eva Green plays the mother Eve Connor and I still can't tell if she's acting good or bad because the role is so special and Green also fills it in a very "freaky" way. The fact is that I found it difficult to care about her disappearance because she is such a strange and confused character. The other roles are well filled by Christopher Meloni, Angela Basset, Shiloh Fernandez and Thomas Jane, among others. The problem is that the scenes with Kat and her therapist (Basset) seem stuck in between and the storyline around Kat and the police officer (Jane) makes no sense and has absolutely no value for the story.
The ending with the denouement of Eve Connor's disappearance is actually mentioned in passing and makes little impression on the viewer. This strengthens my belief that director Gregg Araki first and foremost wanted to make a film about growing up in the 80s under difficult circumstances (missing mother and absent father). This is only half successful for me because it is difficult to empathize with Kat, Eve and certainly the other characters. Big plus for the wonderful soundtrack. With The Cure, among others, you can never go wrong.

Unfortunately a flat film that lacks any kind of depth due to a lack of subtlety. It should therefore not be called a coming-of-age. The predictable ending is postponed for no reason, so that the film still feels long-winded despite the 91 playing minutes. The ending itself can be called strong in terms of drama, but that cannot save the film. *2.5

Good.
Average can be a bit higher from me, this kind of cinema always works well with me. I had no experience with this Araki yet, but I do see a number of his films that I want to see, especially after seeing this film actually.
Woodley's acting is strong. Stronger than a lot of other roles I see of her these days. Also has the perfect look for her role and knows how to be a lot more convincing. Moreover, she is not at all annoying to look at her here. (Long hair looks much better on her than short).
Green also plays strong, perfectly succeeds in her role. But Meloni as a sulk can also be there. The movie is a bit distant, which limits the drama, but it gets along well at times. A string is nowhere near hitting it, but it is well portrayed.
Perfect use of color, camera work could have been a bit more striking, but that's just outside of it. The atmosphere is great, always a warm, American summer atmosphere. It's actually a pure drama film but it remains light enough so that the pace is just good enough not to be boring.
The film is also much too fun to follow, with bright colors and interesting dialogues. The concept of "find the mother" is boring but thank God Araki doesn't really get into it. Instead, we get to see more of Woodley's life, and it works just fine.
Well done movie this one, better than the average teen dramas out there. Always knows how to hit the perfect emotions, without it hitting your chord. Finale is more exciting, and thanks to the good direction, this still manages to be exciting. Funny, because this story could just as well have been a horror movie or pure mystery. But Araki just chooses teen drama.
Fine, more than adequate. Most enjoyed.
