“Everything of value is defenseless” is a well-known line of poetry by Lucebert. Film shows how defenseless people are against gossip, which ultimately destroys their lives. Audrey Hepburn and especially Shirley MacLaine give strong performances, but unfortunately the children's acting is too thick and therefore disturbing.

Excellent film in which two women run a boarding school for girls, until they are discredited. A well constructed story. Sometimes subtle, sometimes a bit over the top, but in that capacity it is a beautiful document of the times. The strongest scene is without a doubt the long confrontation in the grandmother's house. Good acting and in the review the vote was raised to a well-deserved 4.0 stars.

Classic Sunday brought The Children's Hour and thus a film that I mainly took with me because of the cast. Furthermore, it was an unknown film to me, but with a story that has an interesting basis, so I watched the film last night with great interest.

The story is clearly centered around the two young ladies Karen and Martha who do a lot of self-effacing at school, not knowing the disaster that lies in wait after crossing swords with a bastard of a child. Other than that, the story doesn't amount to much, but it is more than enough for an interesting film and good acting. And that is what we get with an always good James Garner, two damn beautiful ladies in the form of Hepburn and MacLaine, but especially Karen Balkin convincing as a rebellious child who stops at nothing in her lies and thus tricks the grandmother.

The build-up to the gossip, the aunt's stupid words and the consequences is strong, and they don't lie. And the film reminds me very much of the Scandinavian Jagten and, despite its age and slow pace, it is quite topical because of the 'Me Too' movement of recent years. The question, as in so many cases, is and remains what the middle is and what the truth is. Speaking of damage that cannot be reversed, being exonerated is one thing, but what about image and psychological damage?

In my opinion, The Children's Hour is an excellent film that holds the attention and is well acted, presented in beautifully moody black and white and, despite its slow pace, does not really feel dated to me. Therefore, four stars as far as I'm concerned.
