Nowhere to Go But Up plot

French actress Val (Audrey Tautou) wants to try her luck in America and leaves for New York. Once there, it is more difficult to find work than she initially thought. When she meets Jack (Justin Théroux) a screenwriter, she falls hopelessly in love with him. At first he is immensely annoyed by her optimistic view of life, but slowly she becomes his muse.

Few messages and votes for this one, which is understandable because if I hadn't stumbled upon it by chance on our favorite pay channel, I would have missed it too, without any self-blame. A romantic comedy with a somewhat alternative style, a half-hearted attempt to make something comparable to Tautou's major breakthrough film two years earlier. Audrey's contribution is doable, she is less in shape than as Amelie, but as a viewer you want to feel sympathy for this crazy girl. Motherfucker Theroux almost single-handedly kills the entire movie, impossible to imagine these two falling for each other in real life. With more chemistry between the lovebirds, this would definitely have worked better as a film, New York as a setting somewhat compensates for the lack of pure class and memorable situations, but I can't give it more than a passing grade. If you have a lot of ironing to do I would prefer that.

No, not nice. Tautou's naive game went just too far and therefore does not work at all. In Amélie it just fits, but not here and that detracts enormously from the film and especially my viewing experience. I can't take the film seriously on any level. And even a comedy has to do that in some way. Furthermore, there is zero chemistry with Theroux, a not very interesting plot and visually the film is sometimes nice, but that is also the only positive point. 1.0*.
