The film starts off well and has many funny scenes. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes tedious, and the story makes no sense. It ultimately becomes a series of absurd sequences (which also recur repeatedly) using rather simple-looking stop-motion techniques. Audrey Tautou could have salvaged the whole thing, but unfortunately, she even started to irritate me.

Some typical Gondry scenes are quite nice (the flying cloud, the dance party).

The film takes way too long to stay interesting.

Boris Vian's novel "L'Ecume Des Jours," on which this visually stunning film is based, has quite a few surrealist elements. One of these is the fact that the story takes place in a world where objects reflect the human emotions they evoke. This seems like a natural fit for Michel Gondry, the man behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Initially, there's hardly any plot, and Gondry entertains you with a never-ending barrage of visual delights that keep you on the edge of your seat, thanks in part to the enthusiastic performances of the cast. But when Mood Indigo focuses on a tragic love story, that enjoyment fades, and Gondry descends into pretentiousness and mediocre melodrama. Clearly a film of two halves: one excellent and one mediocre.

Very cool, because it's incredibly creative. I love surrealism, and this film offers that in spades. Especially in the beginning, you're constantly surprised. Towards the end, the plot becomes more dramatic, and the film gradually transitions to black and white, which is also an interesting touch. I do feel the creativity wanes a bit towards the end, though. It's probably partly due to the drama, but it does mean I'm giving it a 4* rating instead of a 4.5*.
