There is quite a lot of singing in this Stan Oliver film, and also with a social undertone, such as the cotton plantation where Black people have to work hard for the white man boss, in this film which would be the first feature film by the comedic duo.

For the rest, the classic falls and stumbles, some water scenes, throwing punches, misunderstandings, etc., but still a few successful jokes.

Over the years, I have developed quite a lot of appreciation for those two, and their films are just long enough so that their cliché humor still comes across sufficiently fresh and successful in their next film.

I cracked up a few times again with this brilliant duo. A brisk pace of silliness and gaffes. The scenes where they go into hiding in a community of Black people indicate that this film was truly made in a different era with a different kind of society. Is it a coincidence, by the way, that singing is started among both the 'free' Black people and the prisoners (whites)? An interesting parallel, and it is questionable whether this can be interpreted as social criticism. The outtakes (extras on the DVD) revealed that quite a bit of subplot was cut out, to make room for a woman in distress due to a fire during the prisoner uprising, and the fight with the tiger was also heavily shortened. I found some of those scenes very funny, and it is somewhat of a question why they didn't make it into the final version.

Laurel and Hardy always played similar characters, but in varying social contexts. Here, they are active as bootleggers during Prohibition. As usual, Ollie is the one concocting a plan, and Laurel the one who messes it up. A comedic duo always presents a contrast. The Fat One was overly polite with accompanying mannerisms; the Thin One spoke in a high-pitched voice, sometimes crying like a clown.

They had already made many shorts, but producer Hal Roach believed that with a longer arc and length, they could reach a wider audience. They produced international versions in five different languages. Director James Parrott made clever use of the new possibilities offered by sound, giving Stan an exhilarating sound coming from his hollow tooth, which becomes a recurring plot element.

James Finlayson, here in the role of a teacher with a doctoral cap, was their co-star, with his comedic timing and his angry facial expression featuring one raised eyebrow. Walter Long also holds his own as the Tiger, who intimidates his fellow prisoners with his massive physique.

The prison offers ample opportunities for scenes with action, suspense, and misunderstandings. Once escaped, the comical duo ends up on a plantation, where they employ a camouflage technique among the farmhands that is no longer politically correct, but certainly funny. The song Lazy Moon provides a beautiful moment of calm with deep voices and warm harmonies.
