Karsu plot
The 'Dutch Norah Jones' is called Karsu Dönmez and was discovered behind the piano in her parents' Turkish restaurant. For three years Mercedes Stalenhoef is there as Karsu climbs from the restaurant to the stage of Carnegie Hall, and further into the music world. Young as she is, the sparkling Karsu knows exactly what she wants: to become a famous artist. Meanwhile, the family life of the Dönmez family also continues. That school diploma has to come first and that career doesn't have to happen overnight. Stalenhoef observes Karsu in her daily life, in Amsterdam but also during the summer holidays with family in Turkey. It is no coincidence that this is in the village of Karsu, which means 'black water'. The migration history of her parents is also discussed in passing. Her parents carefully guide their daughter and her career, sometimes too much, Karsu thinks. But their looks and sometimes concerned remarks mainly express their great pride. Father Dönmez: "I float when she sits behind the piano."
