Another fascinating film from Spain! The Spanish certainly know how to make films, and they prove it once again with Los Ultimos Dias. They outperform many of their counterparts in the genre, and that's worth saying. Especially when you consider the way this apocalyptic film is constructed: it's not a crazy flesh-eating virus that's the culprit, but agoraphobia! A very bold choice that turns out to be a success. A refreshing approach, especially considering the many other apocalyptic films you could swear you've seen before.

This time, Barcelona is the setting. Even though we don't see much of the city (since most of it takes place under or inside buildings), it's still a new and pleasant environment. Very fine and tight camerawork creates a detailed view of the city. Good effects give the film's agoraphobic danger a nice doomsday atmosphere.

The acting is excellent. Quim Gutiérrez and José Coronado have a great interplay, and it's clearly visible. It's enjoyable to follow their journey through underground Barcelona. In many apocalyptic films, the chemistry between a traveling group is completely absent, and as a result, you have little to no sympathy for the characters. Los Ultimos Dias is absolutely not one of them. The acting is neither overblown nor too cold: the director doesn't shoot himself in the foot with two characters the audience shrugs at.

Los Ultimos Dias is an interesting and surprising film. A rather fresh perspective on the genre makes this film worth watching. The only downside is the saccharine ending; it really wasn't necessary. The ending also raises some questions, especially on a practical level. But that, in my opinion, covers all the film's flaws. Recommended for fans of the genre. 3.5*

Meh.

Mediocre execution, especially. Then you want to use a slightly different angle, and then you make the remaining 99 percent of your film flow exactly as we've seen in countless other films.

It started off okay. Nothing special, but the mystery was still alive. Once he was on his way to his beloved, things went downhill. You can see every discovery coming from miles away, and because the Pastor brothers aren't pushing things too fast, it gets a bit irritating. Take that part where Enrique gets stabbed. He walks with some difficulty afterward. He says he's okay, yes, really, only to realize the wound is incredibly serious! By now, you and your companion, with whom you're watching the film, have already told them what's going to happen ten times. This happens in almost every film watched by avid filmgoers, but that's why pacing is so important. These filmmakers are completely clueless about it.

The overall post-apocalyptic atmosphere still appeals to me, and the ending was pretty funny. I didn't really have a clue why it was there the whole time, though you can question the overall idea. Ultimately, according to the wiki, it's the fear of leaving your familiar surroundings. Well, the guys do that surprisingly easily and often, albeit underground. But considering it's primarily a pulpy adventure film, that's forgivable. It could have been much more enjoyable, though.

2 stars.

A pretty decent film. It's understandable that you don't see much of the streets of Barcelona. The story also takes place largely underground. The acting is quite good, and the cinematography looks great. It's quite exciting at times, with a fair amount of action. You could call it action sci-fi. Highly recommended.
