Stand Up Guys plot

"They don't make 'em like they used to."

A group of retired mobsters decide to reunite for one last epic night. Val (Pacino) has just completed a 28-year prison term solely for refusing to betray one of his criminal friends. His best friend Doc (Walken) picks him up at the prison gate, and the two soon make contact with another old friend, Hirsch (Arkin). Their bond is still very strong and the three bring back old memories. Despite their age, their abilities to cause noise and disturbance are still intact. Bullets fly as they make a hilarious attempt to make up for the decades of crime, drugs and sex they've missed.

Mediocre !

Despite the cast, the film fails to convince me. The reason is mainly the plot that sometimes has weird twists. Here and there there are a few nice scenes in the film that also make for a good laugh, but as a whole the film offers too little considering the genre. A lot of dialogues pass that are not always interesting. The sudden death of Arkin and the fact of Walken's deadly order that Pacino just accept that his life doesn't matter to him, doesn't seem plausible after all. And then the open ending .... that makes no sense in this film. Addison Timlin is a nice appearance and knows how to add something in the relationship with the two gangsters with her role, but too many criticisms to speak of a decent film. 5/10

This film receives little appreciation, especially from critics. Not quite right in my opinion. Pacino and Walken portray two delightful characters. And despite the fact that the scenario is flat and not very uplifting, there is not much wrong with it. The touches of absurdism in between the subtle, dry humor can get in the way if you take them too seriously. But it didn't bother me. All in all, I had a great time with this somewhat unusual and not particularly exciting film.
