“For those of us about to die, we salute you. I die a free man!”
Friendly. The sets and the action scenes look great, and the story also has plenty of potential. Romans, a volcanic eruption, gladiators, a revenge movie and some romance, there's plenty to enjoy. The problem is the poorly developed characters, and the acting isn't always good either. Harington is flat, and whoever cast Kiefer Sutherland as Roman should be fired. Bright spots are Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Browning, who at least manage to put some emotion into their playing.

Unfairly maligned film. The special effects are better than expected. The creators have also received praise from volcanologists, I read. The fights are fun too.
However, it is all a bit too clinical and too 'neat' in terms of decoration. The low point is of course the predictable story in which all the boxes are ticked. You not only know who is going to die but also when, you know who is going to fight who, and so on. That's a weak point, but all in all, it's not that bad.

What a cliche movie at its best!!! Nothing wrong with that in itself, but we've seen this many times before. All handsome tough men and handsome slim ladies. They're going to get along.
Lots of fighting, lots of action, and then suddenly the volcano starts to spit!
More action, more fighting, blah, blah, blah.
Nice, but we know this bag of tricks.
Next.
