Richelieu plot

Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu is a descendant of a noble family from the French Poitou. He becomes bishop of Luçon after his brother lets this old family law pass him by. This for this time very worldly man of God sets himself to serve not the Church, but his native France. The ambitious Cardinal Richelieu is appointed minister by Louis XIII and makes a quick, steep climb to the top. 'The Iron Cardinal' as he was also known, has established himself as a statesman and aims to ensure and expand French supremacy in Europe. However, he overlooks the fact that the common people suffer deprivation and hunger. Richelieu quickly becomes the most hated man in France.

Richelieu, the most hated man in France. Thus the caricatured creation of Alexandre Dumas.

"Goutons ce bouillon d'ignorance"

Jean-Pierre Decourt gives a more historical view of the cardinal in this miniseries. For example, the French King Louis XIII is not in the back pocket of the Red Eminence. And the prime minister must always maneuver cleverly to achieve his policy. The people even applaud him despite France's initially unsuccessful participation in the Thirty Years' War.

Decourt leaves little intact of the image of the Machiavellian statesman. The scene of a violently emotional Richelieu at the deathbed of his confessor is poignant. The love for his cats (he had 14!) is also beautifully portrayed.
