Young Man with a Horn plot

"Put down your trumpet, jazzman. I'm in the mood for love!"

Rick Martin discovers he has a gift for music and falls for the trumpet. The legendary Art Hazzard helps him play the trumpet. He eventually becomes a star trumpet player, but refuses to play along to the orchestra's boring tunes. He much prefers to play real jazz. Then the band turns on him, causing Rick to get in trouble.

Always nice to see a rebellious character, played by yet another excellent Kirk Douglas,

who refuses to stay neatly within the lines when it comes to music and with ambitions to with his

to be able to shine in the trumpet playing. Found the acting scenes between Douglas and Doris Day to be the highlights

of the film, which I otherwise didn't find particularly special. Lauren Bacall plays quite subtly, as is often the case, and only makes an appearance about halfway through the film. Fans of

trumpet music gets quite a workout here, because with multiple scenes in which Douglas

goes really wild with the trumpet.
