A very compressed version, meaning we miss many of Odysseus's adventures and encounters (no Lotophages, no Aeolus, no Laistrygonians, no Helios's oxen, and no Calypso) and a number of small but striking details and supporting characters were also cut, but nonetheless colorful and reasonably entertaining. Plus points are Silvana Mangano's fine double role and the beautiful transfer (Italian spoken, Dutch subtitles, including a German-dubbed trailer) from Videofilmexpress from 2006. Personally, I especially enjoyed seeing Franco Interlenghi (Moraldo in Fellini's I vitelloni) as Telemachus. Not a classic, but fun to watch.

Stiff and way too old-fashioned for my taste. It lacks any verve. Not really a film I could appreciate. I liked the scene with Polyphemus the Cyclops, but I didn't think the rest was really great. This is definitely a film that deserves a remake. Sometimes an Italian phrase echoes between the English dialogue. Strange.

Almost 75 years ago, a version of The Odyssey was released, albeit somewhat flawed and less spectacular. However, the Italian production certainly has its charm and still looks quite impressive, especially visually. The slow first half hour is a downside, as is the silly Italian dubbing by Kirk Douglas. Fortunately, when the focus shifts to the protagonist's experiences, the pace picks up a bit and things really come alive.
