As often happened in those days, an American was dubbed into Italian. Steve Cochran plays a man with a morbid case of lovesickness. He loses all motivation to work. On his odyssey through the Po Valley, he encounters a motley crew of working-class people. The women he meets along the way can't help him forget Irma (Alida Valli). His daughter Rosina is spontaneous and can come up with games everywhere, despite their material limitations. The moment when he puts her on that bus is heartbreaking. He sinks further into a spiral of meaninglessness, until he leaves Irma, guilt-ridden, in her new life. The title ("The Scream") expresses utter despair and may be a reference to Munch's expressionist painting.

A truly beautiful film. I'm currently watching everything I own and haven't seen by Antonioni in chronological order, and although the quality has risen with each film, this is the first one I truly find fantastic. It's quite moving, and the difference with neorealism is particularly important here. It's an inward-looking story, and the cry comes from within, not from without. It's not an injustice you can rebel against. A review coming soon: L'Avventura.

quite a depressing film that is nevertheless presented in a stoic manner, I liked it but it doesn't really make you happy.
