Pretty nice.

What Occult mainly succeeds in is to put down the documentary feeling well. No found footage, but edited material. Shiraishi already had experience with it in Noroi, he is doing well here.

Mind you, not really horror this movie, more mystery. It doesn't get really scary anywhere, but it does get a bit sick towards the end. And especially because the documentary aspect of the film works well, that ending is a success. The slide of the main character is very well depicted, although you can of course have some reservations about the credibility left and right.

The film really doesn't have much more to offer. Functionally ugly filmed, but a separate soundtrack, which unfortunately is only half successful, and in the end it also takes a bit too long. A few more nice cameos, for example, Kiyoshi Kurosawa passes by as himself and we see Shiraishi himself as a director.

Successful, but don't expect horror and keep in mind that the documentary material is mainly functional. Outside of the soundtrack, this film is really poor in cinematic qualities.

3.0*

I thought this was quite an interesting piece of film - I only discovered Shiraishi last week through Noroi. I had to get used to the format there, with many found-footage-like aspects and a somewhat fragmentary style. Okaruto is a bit more mysterious, but has a somewhat similar style: here we follow a story through (mainly) handicam footage that roughly starts when a weirdo stabs a number of people at a Japanese tourist site. But gradually we see how one of the victims, Eno, has had hallucinations since the attack, and becomes more and more convinced that he is an instrument in the hand of a Japanese god, and prepares another even bigger attack himself. It's an interesting look into a derailed mind, which feels pretty real and where the mystery remains, especially about what's really true about the supernatural influences, or if Eno is just plain crazy . A little more concise would have been nice, nevertheless a great film.

Doesn't reach Noroi's level, but here too the documentary-like form looks nice again. This time we follow a man who is the only one to survive a stabbing and a group of people want to ask him some questions about this. It soon turns out that this man brings more than they had hoped. Again very convincingly acted, which of course helps the docu vibe enormously, and the further you get into the story, the gloomier the atmosphere starts to get.
