"How far would you go to escape the past?"
During the summer of 1998 and the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, the light-skinned Dr. Coleman Silk teaches at a college in New England. He teaches African-American studies there, but has pretended to be Jewish all his life. When he calls some absent students 'spooks', a racial controversy ensues. Despite all this, he tries to hide his racial secret and also his relationship with his very young cleaning lady. A writer tries to unravel the story of Silk's life.

A film with a beautiful story, told in an atmospheric way.
The film is especially helped by the strong acting. Hopkins knows what to do with these kinds of roles and once again proves to be a class actor. Kidman and Sinise both play pretty good roles, but it's especially Ed Harris who manages to impress the most as Kidman's ex.
In addition to strong acting, the film has a good soundtrack, which clearly enhances the film at some moments. The film has a decent cinematography, with some very nice images. The film manages to strike the right chord at times, without falling into the trap of being overly sentimental.
Here and there the film drops a bit, partly because the film is just very slow and the film is sometimes quite heavy due to all the problems that everyone seems to have. But in general the level remains above average and so is the film. The strong cast contributes an important part to this, that is clear.

Nice film in which an old Jewish teacher is fired for a racist remark. An interesting story, but the film tries to tell too much, making it sometimes a bit messy as a whole. However, in the end everything is neatly finished. Furthermore, a strong cast, where Anthony Hopkins may have been a wrong choice because of his physical characteristics.

Impressive game from Kidman and Hopkins. But, Hopkins doesn't fit the story with his big head. And perhaps even worse, Wentworth Miller doesn't remotely resemble Hopkins, and therefore doesn't stand a chance of credibility as the young Coleman Silk.
I think the story is rock solid, and - which I already started with - Kidman and Hopkins play very well, and together they are also a beautiful and interesting couple of damaged people. It comes across well, and it goes without saying that they are looking for each other, they need each other. The film's weakness is that there's too much dragging in - Sinise's frame story could have been left out. Or the many flashbacks. But, then we might also miss Jacinda Barrett's performance. Aiai, what a beautiful girl she is for a while.
And what I also find funny is the time setting in the period when the Lewinsky affair surfaced. That takes you back a bit in those days. Strong way to jump back about 15 years.
