To avoid any kind of sexual behavior, these astronauts are always men. The Russians have both a male and a female astronaut on the moon and they have no problems. One of the few Jerry Lewis films I hadn't seen yet. In this one, Lewis is more low-key than usual. It's not a film that will make you roar with laughter, but it does have some nice moments and funny one-liners in the first half hour.

"The important thing is that Miss Davenport is ready and willing to go to the moon with you on Thursday. You don't run accross a girl like that every day!"

Moreover, this film perhaps has the most romantic dialogue between two people who want to get to know each other over dinner:

"I took it upon myself to get this biography that I made out when I joined the service. It's a standard form and I think it will be safe some time. I suppose you filled one out too?"
"Yes, I just didn't happen to think to bring it along with me. Hmm very interesting, name, address, age, weight... Well, it's all there... everything a girl contemplating marriage should know!"

After that, once they land on the moon, and especially when those Russians come aboard, things get a lot less exciting. Although the film is set in 1989, the future looks very 1960s. And the spacecraft on the moon reminded me of the movie Barbarella, including the lame sex jokes. I did recognize Dennis Weaver, known from the TV series McCloud, as astronaut Hoffman.

Aha, nothing better than being confronted in the dead of night with the delightful emptiness of a late Jerry Lewis. In 1966, Jerry was essentially too old and overweight to get away with his bungling rogue persona. The jokes and gags are largely absent (he'd even given up his nasal Jewish voice by this point), leaving only the puffy potentate Jerry, breathlessly and without really believing in himself, exhorting the viewer: "Hey hey! All sorts of social and cultural changes are happening! The times are a-changing. But look at this: consumer society! bourgeois decency! Innocent sexual innuendo!" All that seems to be more than enough for Jerry. So there's essentially no plot, nor any humor, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this drawn-out variety act.

A couple of nice ladies, Lewis who acts a bit more normal, and a somewhat weak story about Americans who, if they go too long without a woman, go crazy with lust.

Oh well, it's entertaining at times, but other than that it doesn't really amount to much.
