Intense and angry abuse and courtroom drama that will not leave you cold. Especially the scenes with the young children really hit home thanks to the incredibly strong acting of those children, especially Hyeon-soo Kim as the endearing Yeon-doo.

The film reminded me of Indictment: The McMartin Trial (1995), but the core of that story is a mirror image of this film.

Really a film that you have to let sink in. Saw it a week ago and it left me speechless, still am a bit. I unsuspectingly started this film after a tip from BBarbie on the forum The South Korean film, for which thanks.

It starts off as a strong mysterious and atmospheric thriller that then has some light-hearted and funny moments (like the girl who eats the apple they're painting during drawing class). I think that's the strength of South Korean cinema, which seamlessly mixes genres, which keeps a film original, surprising and unpredictable. But then comes the next twist and it hits you like a sledgehammer, once you realize what this film is about, and especially when you know it's based on a true story. The helplessness comes through the screen and grabs you. The moment the teacher hits the other teacher with a flower pot you wish you had a flower pot in your hands to do exactly the same.

Long doubted whether it should get 4 or 4.5* from me. As a film it is excellent in all respects, cinematographic, acting, etc. only some scenes are sometimes unpleasant to watch which made me doubt that score, but they are necessary to convey all the emotions that this film has, hence a solid 4.5* for this impressive film.

Shocking. The rottenness of society in all its glory. The scenes of child abuse were sickening. The film was banned in many countries for under 18s for that reason. A true story about sexual abuse in a school for deaf-mute children. The new teacher who starts working there soon blows the whistle, but in some Asian countries citizens who publicly contribute to society are protected by the justice system.. That is actually the bottom line of the entire film.

I notice that there is mainly an emotional vote for this kind of melodramas. And of course it is also an infuriating film about deep injustice. But otherwise this was a legal drama that went very much by the book. The facts, the whistleblower, the trial, the verdict and a bitter ending., and all that spiced up with dramatic music to make it even more depressing. But excellent acting, especially by those children. How do they actually manage that?
