De Lege Plek - Het Zwijgen van Bovensmilde plot
In the documentary 'De Empty Place', director John Appel investigates how a village community deals with a collective trauma. Thirty-five years after a primary school kidnapping, the film shows how difficult it is to process such a drastic event. A film about silence, fear, sadness and love. On May 23, 1977, the village of Bovensmilde in Drenthe became world news. On a warm spring day, four young South Moluccans kidnap a primary school with 105 children and five teachers. The Moluccans hope to reinforce their ideal of an independent Moluccan republic (RMS) by taking their own fellow villagers hostage. They also think that with the kidnapping of the school they have a very strong trump card to support the simultaneous train hijacking at De Punt, a little further on the Assen-Hoogeveen route.
