For almost my entire life I have known that fascists are the scum of the earth and yet I am always shocked by their barbaric behavior towards political opponents. This is also the case with this film about the bestial, inhuman treatment of alleged communists after the Spanish Civil War. It is also well known that some prominent representatives of the Catholic Church and their blind, cowardly followers harbored an equally deep-felt hatred for dissenters. Director Zambrano succeeds in conveying the merciless repression in a gripping way. A violent film that did not contribute to my peace of mind.

There are films that you regret having seen afterwards. This is one of them. Not because they are bad, but because they hit you like a sledgehammer and you have trouble breathing. Then such a film has to sink in. I read here that I wanted to see it in 2014. Why it took me ten years, I don't know. But I can well imagine the anger of BBarbie. arno74 summarizes the film well here, I don't have to do that anymore.

In Western Europe, most people think that the Spanish Civil War happened (very) long ago. Some people in Spain think so too. The opposite is true. Spain has never come to terms with that dark page in its history. It is still an open wound. Just look at how the 'right' in Spain rallied when Franco was taken from his mausoleum. Thousands of relatives are still looking for the remains of people who were arrested and murdered after the civil war and buried in mass graves. Because that is what those in power do, Franco then, in Bosnia later and in our time Assad in Syria, as has now come to light.
