The Sapphires plot

"Follow your heart. Discover your soul."

1968 was the year the world started to change. Riots broke out in the streets all over the world. It was the time of hard drugs, soft drugs, free love, psychedelic music, the shocking murders of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. The newspapers were dominated by the Vietnam War. For four young Aboriginal women, 1968 is the year that changed their lives forever. Sisters Gail, Julie and Cynthia are discovered along with their cousin Kay by Dave, an hapless Irish musician, with a taste for Irish whiskey and soul music. Dave sends the girls to the war zones of South Vietnam, where they sing classic soul songs for the US Marines.

Nice film in which four Aboriginal girls perform for the American troops in Vietnam. Based on a true story, the film also manages to portray a nice picture of the times. It all remains quite light and therefore easy to watch. A nice soundtrack and the cast does a nice job.

A fun film with a beautiful story, partly based on true events. The infectious humor, the acting, the beautiful cinematography and the nice soundtrack make this a top film in many ways. I was very surprised and honestly I was sorry that the film was over, because I enjoyed myself immensely.

Light-hearted musical drama based on true events about a quartet of young Aboriginals who are discovered in 1968 at a local talent show by the burned-out musician and manager Dave Lovelace [Chris O'Dowd] who forges the ladies into a Motown-esque girl group that is allowed to perform for American soldiers in Vietnam. Racism and an identity crisis (one of the girls is a light-skinned mixed-race woman) are a common thread throughout the story, but it never becomes heavy-handed and the covers of 60s classics are delicious.
