De Regels van Matthijs plot

45-year-old Matthijs is autistic and in battle with the world around him. People are unimaginable and unreliable to him, they do not adhere to the logic of his thinking. Matthijs therefore records and archives every conversation. The archives reach to the ceiling. When the housing association threatens to evict Matthijs's apartment, the ground beneath his existence disappears.

One of the better documentaries I've ever seen. Endearing, but also very hard, with intense emotions, but always that smile of Matthijs who is amazed about everything and always chuckles.

I identify with him, don't have an autistic spectrum disorder, but feel him. And with me probably many; the feeling that sometimes you are not understood, that you are belittled by the government or that you end up in unpleasant situations because of your stubbornness.

Strongly filmed by Schmidt, clinical, often close to Matthijs' face, but very honest. The piled up forms and other collections are impressive. Matthijs's eyes shine as easily as they hurt and drive him to foolish deeds. His environment is probably tired of helping and his own world is the best after all... He understands it all and with that understanding he decides that this world is not his. I won't soon forget this. 4.5*

Penetrating and impressive, these are the words that are often used in this special documentary. Special, because the story of Matthijs is only told from his own point of view: no care provider or family member almost speaks. That is not necessary: the images of Matthijs's house and the impression he makes are enough to allow the viewer to appreciate the increasingly hopeless situation. His outbursts of anger go to the marrow and the end just as much...

Nah.

Docu that stands or falls with the interest in the main character, because with the subject itself has been thrown to death. You don't have to expect much in terms of styling either. Camera on a tripod and start filming, you won't find them much more functional than this.

Unfortunately, I did not find the subject to be distinctive enough. It is a sad account of one person as there are hundreds, if not thousands. It's sad and tragic, but not really exceptional. The focus may be slightly different because of the problems with his house, but that is also just a coat rack to once again hang the problems of the autistic fellow man.

A few details are interesting, such as the date format he uses. He doesn't seem like a real idiot savant to me, though, because he confessed on the date that he couldn't immediately translate in his head. But those are the moments that make the documentary even more interesting. The little system in his bathroom also gives a glimpse of what goes on in the brain of such a man.

Furthermore, I thought this was too much of a personal drama, a gradation worse than what goes on every day on TV (with men not finishing the renovations on their house and such), but not unique enough to hang an entire documentary on, especially because autism as a subject has been discussed so often.

1.5*
