Below average Elvis film. Only to be appreciated by fans. The soundtrack isn't up to much either. Particularly unintentionally hilarious.

A production by Sam Katzman aka the king of the quickies. This was shot in 15 days and even the colonel was reportedly dismayed by the lack of quality. His idea to have the story linked together by a talking camel - to save the day - would have been a superlative of what lies ahead. For the first time we see Elvis in an imaginative environment - in the style of Ali Baba. These types of films are a genre in themselves and they interest me moderately. Harum Scarum is labeled as complete camp, which it certainly is. But I liked Elvis' previous camp better: at least you still have the typical sixties vintage style that looks so fantastically cool. This Harum Scarum was a bit boring for me. The songs themselves were okay as I like this kind of pulp/easy listening from his film catalog. What is inexcusable is the lack of proper production of these songs. It's unbelievable how much they screwed up for an artist of this status. That is a problem that appears more often in later film soundtracks, but here it is really striking.
