'The Artist is Present' outlines the career of performance artist Marina Abramovic. Abramovic became as famous as it is infamous for performances that often teetered on the edge of physical and psychological self-mutilation. This documentary follows the artist as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major retrospective of her work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMa). In this retrospective exhibition at MoMa, the artist was present for three months, and six days a week. She sat motionless on a chair at a table and any visitor who wished could sit opposite her. Five minutes or even five hours. Or even longer.
