Arcadia plot

The journey to Arcadia, a small town in sunny California, takes several days. This is the city where father goes with his three children in their station wagon, which is packed to the brim. Looks like they are moving. There is nothing wrong and their mother will soon join them. At least, so it seems. But soon 12-year-old Greta discovers that something is amiss. What is her father hiding from them?

We can hardly imagine it in our Benelux where the distances between living, working and moving all happen in the inner circle. That's why I always find those road movies very intriguing. Not only because of the views and certain atmosphere that these films evoke, but also because of the characters' motives to leave everything behind and start over elsewhere (and still in your own country).

I found it difficult to get to know the father. Quite caring on the one hand, an incredible bag on the other. Greta especially had a hard time with it and regularly argued with him verbally. It's those moments that make the film strong and entertaining.

I found the cutscene with those friends/family superfluous and meaningless, the chance passages along gas stations, motels and roadside restaurants I found more interesting. If only because of the bickering with the waitress about the portions or Greta's vegetarian fare.

That the reunion with the mother was not going to go well was written in the stars. It is solved rather well and had a more serious dilemma in mind. A 4.0* might be a bit too much, but some scenes certainly touched me, hence this slight exaggeration.
