Les Mémés Cannibales plot

"They just love their grandchildren... well done!"

Two old ladies invite their families to a birthday party at their lavish estate. The guests don't feel like it, but because of the prospect of a huge inheritance, it's better not to miss out on these kinds of occasions. During the party, a present is delivered from the already disinherited black sheep of the family. It is an antique box that turns out to harbor demonic powers. Under the influence of these forces, the two elderly hostesses suddenly turn into rabid, murderous creatures and the party takes a very different turn...

Well, in this case the title was definitely more fun than the movie.

Apparently I have a low tolerance for these kinds of extreme low budget films, because the lousy acting of most actors together with the badly dubbed voices really got on my nerves. I also found the editing much too chaotic and the gore was with a few exceptions not very well or fleetingly shown.

It's funny that everything is allowed and that even a little girl doesn't survive. Also the scene with the priest who has to choose between suffering briefly or burning in hell for eternity had a funny morbid undertone. And there were certainly a few gore highlights and some clever lines here and there, but not enough to make it really fun for me.

I still think that Troma and related low budget films that they buy are not really for me. Low budget is possible, but to judge the film more mildly because of that, no.

For fans of pulp with a lot of patience. The first half hour of the film is used as an introduction of the most unsympathetic characters together. And then you as a viewer have time to get used to the idiotic dubbing and the acting. In principle, the film could easily have been half as long if you would remove all the pauses in the dialogues (apparently the French actors had trouble with English and the English voice-over actors had to adopt this strange way of speaking). It is laughable and tiring at the same time.

After half an hour, the two elderly hostesses finally get to work, but don't expect a rollercoaster ride of splatter and gore; it remains fairly tame. Here and there, the film goes nicely over the top and it remains funny how clumsy everything is, but you always get the feeling that more could have been gotten out of it. For a film with such a premise - and the name Troma on the poster - you honestly expect a bit more. Fortunately, the film does fall into the category 'so bad that it's also fun', which means that Rabid Grannies is still quite enjoyable entertainment all in all.

2 stars.

Very nice and entertaining horror film with some flaws.

The long build-up and introduction of the different characters did not bother me. There were a few nice one-liners. Once the two old ladies open the present, the film explodes into a delicious gore feast with a few very nice bloody scenes such as with the first victim, the porridge bag that gets stuck in the basement and not to forget the nice scene with the child that starts at the stairs and ends at the top where the grannies devour the child without mercy. The body count is high and there is no attention to children. The film also drops a few stitches such as the heads of the grannies that do not come across as successful. There are also a few too many bloody scenes in the film that can be labeled too tame. Another negative point is the ending that is too simple and quickly reeled off. But we enjoyed ourselves and I urgently have to go and watch Braindead from 1992 again because that is even more fun. 6.5/10
