Argo plot

"The movie was fake. The mission was real."

Based on true events, "Argo" tells the story of a covert operation to rescue six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its peak, militants storm the US embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and take refuge in the Canadian ambassador's home. Knowing it's only a matter of time before the six are discovered and likely killed, CIA specialist Tony Mendez (Affleck) must come up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country.

A true story that was perhaps even more powerful in America because of patriotism. But this film also intrigues as a "neutral" viewer. The atmosphere is charged, sometimes stuffy, and yet there are occasionally some comic elements interwoven that make the whole just that little bit less heavy - and therefore more accessible. Very decent, but contains just a little too little (besides history) to be classified as a real topper for me. Still very deserved 3.5*

A strong, suspenseful film based on true facts. A nice atmosphere creation (I always like movies set in the 70s) and good acting. A bit of humor now and then too, especially with Alan Arkin and John Goodman. Also Ben Affleck, who looks nice with a beard, is doing well. I really enjoyed hearing a bit of Dire Straits in this movie, one of my favorite bands.

Argo had been on my list for a long time, but kept slipping away. Due to a nomination at the time at the Oscars for (among other things) best film - a list that I systematically work through - expectations were quite high. And these expectations were largely fulfilled.

It starts quite nicely with a short history lesson about Iran, playful and illustrative, clear and fascinating. The tone was set, but the loose lesson contrasted somewhat with the monotonous, stiffer sequel of the film. Yet Affleck manages to create a certain atmosphere and image of the difficult diplomatic situation in which the US and, by extension, Canada and the West found themselves. I was familiar with the revolution in 1979, less the predicament of the six American citizens, let alone the fake film that had been set up. Absurd story, surreal, but also believable for that reason. Equally absurd was the child labor involved in piecing together all the scraps of paper. Regardless of the seriousness, I still saw some "humour" in it. Affleck also manages to keep the tension very high. Especially at the airport. You know how it ends, but still I was on the edge of my seat. By the way, I have no idea whether it was actually that exciting, I doubt it anyway ... even with the phone call from that overzealous Iranian agent to the film studio - and the fact that this turned out to be crucial - I doubt without knowledge of the facts .

Still enjoyed the movie because of the historical context and the plan to create a fake movie. Goodman and Arkin provided the light-hearted note. A fun film that doesn't make it too complex, but still remains serious. It is also hallucinatory to observe how hypocritical the West is acting or dealing with their local power pawns for some dollars or oil. The generations later may always muck it out ...
