Extremely bad in all areas. Acting, scare effects, special effects, storyline, characters. One big drama. An hour and a half of my life wasted because I really hoped that more of this theoretically quite nice story could have been made. Not.

0.5* (and that's just because I can't give it any lower)

Bad.

Smiley uses internet culture as motivation, and that means this film uses some references to it to flesh out the legend surrounding the killer it includes. Gallagher also seems to me to be a director who has connections with some vloggers and YTers, so that makes the job a bit easier anyway.

The pity is that, despite the funny concept, this film cannot excel in anything, with the exception of design. To be fair, the killer turned out very well. The disadvantage is that it only appears on screen to a limited extent, but when it does appear on screen, the film hits the spot. Frightening appearance, which only makes it more disappointing that Gallagher doesn't really know how to use him.

Smiley is very boring and gets most of its horror from mediocre scares that have no effect. The film is never exciting due to a poor structure and mediocre acting. Some characters are completely idiotic, including Dawson, who is famous on YouTube himself. I thought Gerard was okay, but the rest of the actors acted rather bored and flawed.

The camera work and the filters are both elements that could have used some extra, because Gallagher manages to achieve very little in the cinematographic field. Every scene, regardless of horror or regular images, never manages to excel in anything. Everything is too noisy and not subtle enough. I suspect that the crew members themselves did not feel like it and therefore put pressure on the director.

Despite all the negatives, I found it entertaining overall and appreciated the references to the internet, whether they were lame or not. Smiley certainly had potential to be good. The killer is intimidating, the pace is reasonable and so is the concept, but the directing execution is quite lacking. Nice to see for its "status", but definitely not a film that will win any awards.
