Awesome movie! A fascinating story in an intriguing setting of American rural life and a wonderful coming-of-age film about friendship and love. Incidentally, this film about two boys being taken in tow by a mysterious man is somewhat reminiscent of Zvyagintsev's equally great (but older) Vozvrashchenie from 2003 (so my answer to sinterklaas's question would be be a 'yes').

Saw the film again today, on 'Belgium One'. As far as I'm concerned, it remains a beautiful film, with an exceptionally modest role by McConaughy. For me it is also primarily a coming of age film, because the film is mainly about 14-year-old Ellis, the older of the 2 friends who develop a special friendship with McConaughy (the age of 'Neck' is not mentioned anywhere, I think, but he looks just a little younger?). Nice atmosphere, which continues to fascinate throughout the film, well-developed characters, and yet also a fascinating 'subplot' that describes McConaughy's story.

A solid 4 stars for me.

It's nice how 'Mud' (2012) combines a biblical parable and a classic coming of age story with a brightly realistic atmospheric portrait of 'white trash' on the Mississippi River. A bit of the bittersweet, gloomy, rebellious poetics of Johnny Cash, Sam Peckinah, Charles Portis, Cormac McCarthy and maybe even ancestor Mark Twain. It's a film that I really want to like, but it just fails to impress. It's certainly not the fault of the two child actors (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland), because they are very strong as the damaged wanderers on the precarious interface between their childish innocence and their guilty adulthood. It's not Matthew McConaughey's fault either, of course, because he's perfect as the mythical father figure who evokes awe and menace. And under the direction of Jeff Nichols, it looks and sounds like one chunk of unadulterated Cajun atmosphere. It's not all that: 'Mud' (2012) wants to be raw and hard, but the emotion it conveys never becomes unbearably harrowing. The overwhelming water violence of the Mississippi ultimately turns out to be the calm waters of a lazy river, in which the characters (and the viewer with them) lazily sway with the waves.
