Whores' Glory plot

A cinematic triptych about prostitution in three countries (Mexico, Thailand and Bangladesh), three languages and three religions. The story centers around the lives of the women; their experiences, their needs and the individual expectations of life. These women experience everything that can happen in a relationship between men and women, both physically and mentally. They receive money for it, without it enriching their lives.

It is frightening how many women end up in prostitution without any chance to do anything else. Although some think it is fine and enjoy it, others indicate that they are very unhappy. Through three locations (Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico) we get a clear picture of this hidden way of life. Many young girls work in the industry and remain blind to other options. The people interviewed seemed to have no trouble at all with the camera in front of them and are completely themselves. Despite a few dirty details with ice cubes, the makers have managed to do that beautifully. I will not quickly put the tragic music on my mp3 player, but it offers good support.

View on the surface

Interesting, varied documentary. I found the part in Bangladesh particularly poignant. Especially in comparison with Thailand and Mexico. Here I regularly got the feeling that people had freely chosen the profession. I am referring to a Mexican woman in particular. In light of the poignant situation in Bangladesh, this moment felt light, almost cheerful.

What I find strong about the director is that he does not pass judgement and does nothing other than give the viewer an insight into the world of prostitution. Where in a number of cases it becomes very clear that this profession was not consciously chosen (this is particularly evident in Bangladesh), I found it in Thailand and Mexico, within most scenes, too neutrally portrayed to really be able to make an assessment of this.

More in-depth interviews would have been welcome, in general. Although this may not have been a conscious decision, because the reasons for choosing this profession will undoubtedly vary greatly and the director tried to paint as global a picture as possible. The documentary now seems to be more based on the situations per country, but then again it may not be entirely fair to base the entire world of prostitution in India on what was shown in the documentary.

3.5*
