The young country woman Dolly Havens has the ambitions of a city girl that exceed her talents. Dolly comes into contact with the itinerant artist Johnny Storm. Johnny further enhances Dolly's 'talents' as an actress. Through Johnny, Dolly gets to know the attractive but also influential theater manager Sam Davis and she is allowed to join his company. However, it isn't long before Sam discovers that Dolly is only a limited actress and a relegation seems irreversible.
