By far the weakest film by Elia Kazan, which I still rate very highly because he has a number of sublime films (5*) to his credit. This one doesn't belong there at all. I think this controversial film at the time —just like Kubrick's “Lolita”— owes its (over)appreciation mainly to its brooding character. Anyway, very mediocre in my eyes.

Good film about a young woman who is already married, but keeps her virginity until her twentieth birthday. Clearly based on a play, and the first half is a bit long. The scenes between Caroll Baker and a debuting Eli Wallach are the best. The finale is also good in which the tensions are heightened a bit.
