The Awakening plot

"They thought they had buried her forever!"

Kara is 3800 years old. The mummy of this Egyptian queen is hidden deep in the hills around Luxor. The sarcophagus is made of gold and numerous treasures lie in the tomb. On the walls around it, hieroglyphs record a secret formula that can cause her reincarnation. Whoever discovers her is doomed. Egyptologist Matthew has been looking for Kara for a long time. Together with his assistant Jane, he scans the hills around Luxor. Meanwhile, his heavily pregnant wife Anne is in the camp. Matthew is lucky in the end and finds the secret grave. At the same moment Anne gives birth to their daughter. Years later, the mysterious forces in the tomb will begin to play their part.

Archaeologist Matthew Corbeck (Charlton Heston) and his heavily pregnant wife Anne (Jill Townsend) are in Egypt, where Matthew and his colleague Jane Turner (Susannah York) are searching for the tomb of an Egyptian princess. Matthew's obsessive search strains his marriage and leads to a series of fatal accidents, but when Jane discovers the tomb's entrance, Matthew is overjoyed. When he finds the princess's tomb, he can't contain his curiosity. However, the moment he breaks open the tomb coincides precisely with Anne's delivery of Margaret, two months premature. Could there be a connection?

This first half hour is promising, but then the story jumps to the present, exactly 18 years later. The viewer already knows that Margaret's 18th birthday won't be a cause for celebration, but then we have to wait about 45 minutes for Matthew to finally realize that. Only then does any real tension build, and this horror film ends with a few decent executions and related jump scares. That's a bit late.

An atmospheric mummy film where the Egyptian locations are a particular asset. Both numerous artifacts and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo appear frequently, bringing back fond memories for those who have visited Egypt. Filming takes place in the Valley of the Kings and other Egyptian tombs rather than in a studio. The story is well-built, but perhaps a bit slow, as the kills and Heston's realization that he's dealing with a prophecy and a reincarnation myth come rather late. The ending is somewhat surprising, given the shot of London overlaid with Queen Kara's shadow. 5/10
