Interesting film, which of course should have been made by a Dutch director. But that didn't happen. A German television film, made with great care, especially in terms of the authenticity of the street scene, the interiors, the clothing of the characters and with excellent acting by Annemarie Steen as the girl who falls in love with a German soldier, and with a leading role of Bernard Droog as the father.

What breaks you is that only German is spoken, even by the Dutch actors and when the story takes place in the Netherlands, which is the vast majority of the time. This is of course understandable for a German film, for a German audience that is not used to subtitles. This is difficult for a Dutch audience that may not speak German. Moreover, intelligibility often leaves much to be desired.

The story itself is not that special and is of course well known. After the war, the girls who had 'colluded' with the Germans were not treated gently. That's not so bad in this film. But the atmosphere of the film captures that feeling of occupation with its uncertainty and lack. How people continue with their lives despite everything and try to make something of it. That's more than enough for that.
