Psychos in Donald Pleasence's institution are not very charmed by their new doctor (Murdock from The A-Team). Psychos, blackout, home invasion. I think this is a nice movie, well it takes some getting used to that we can see Murdock in a serious role, but still quite a few nice moments and a nice pace.

Great psychological horror/thriller. It is a mix of Halloween, When a Stranger Calls and Straw Dogs. The escaped patients/prisoners act excellently, especially Jack Palance and Martin Landau. In the leading role we see Dwight Schultz, He knows how to play a very convincing role with his calm way of convincing and making decisions. And then Donald Plesance who is the head of the institution does not really play a special role but always nice to see him. And a nice cameo from a young Lyn Shaye!

Directed by Jack Scholder, who I knew from Wishmaster 2 and the unjustly hated second part of A Nightmare on Elmstreet. He knows how to create a great tension with realistic reactions of the actors, especially the women. He also plays with your head and shows you things that may not be there. The film suffers from a slow start but is forgivable. Too bad that few have seen this film.

Could that be because of the title that Uwe Boll screwed up...

Bleh.

Many people know this title, but then because of the critically undermined work by Uwe Boll. I saw that about two years ago and recently this part from the 80s was recommended to me. I knew that this would not be the same film, but I had really hoped for it while watching it. Better Boll than this.

Especially the completely lifeless setting and confusing storyline make this film a hellish watch. We jump from big scene to small scene to then jump to a bigger scale again and then end with a small finale. This quite unbalanced tone makes the film really impossible to get through.

Acting is bad and the threats are idiotic. In between I see some nice images of a burning city for example and there is still some mystery hidden behind the concept, but that is about it. No wonder this older title has stuck behind the wallpaper for the modern audience. Oh well, nice to have checked off I think.
